Twisted
Kris 'Curtiz' De Meester
A series of original Polaroid-based collage mixed media pieces (4 Polaroid photos for each image, 24 x 24 cm).
Curtiz:
In the series "Twisted," I delve into the intricate interplay between physical embodiment and emotional resonance through a collection of Polaroid-based collages. These pieces serve as a visual exploration of the profound impact scoliosis, a condition characterized by the distortion of the spinal curvature, has on the body and psyche of a young woman - someone who once held a significant place in my life.
Each artwork within this series is meticulously crafted from four distinct Polaroid photographs, thoughtfully juxtaposed to create a singular, unified image. This deliberate arrangement is symbolic of the fragmented nature of memory, experience, and the self. Just as memories can be compartmentalized and recalled in disjointed fragments, so too does the physical form of the young woman become a mosaic of angles and contours, an embodiment of the twisting journey she navigates.
At first glance, the collages may appear serene, capturing moments frozen in time. However, beneath the surface lies a profound undercurrent of unease, echoing the internal struggles and emotional complexities experienced by the subject. The young woman's body becomes a canvas upon which her emotional turmoil is painted, her condition serving as a metaphor for the inconspicuous battles we all wage beneath the surface of our lives.
Through "Twisted," I aim to evoke empathy and understanding for the young woman's plight, drawing viewers into a contemplative space where the relationship between physical imperfection and the human spirit is explored. The intentional dissonance between the seemingly tranquil exterior and the palpable emotional discord invites viewers to question the narratives we construct around physical appearance and the masks we wear to conceal our inner vulnerabilities.
Ultimately, "Twisted" is a tribute to the young woman who has weathered the storm of scoliosis, and an artistic endeavor to externalize her innermost struggles.
By embracing the fragmented nature of both art and existence, I strive to challenge perceptions, provoke introspection, and foster a deeper connection to the complex stories that lie beneath the surface of those we encounter.
As viewers engage with this series, I invite them to reflect upon their own journeys, embracing the beauty that emerges from the tangle of imperfections that make us uniquely human.
